Early Years
Wayne was born in Sydney in 1942 and educated at Taree High School and enjoyed rugby league and the beach in his young years.

He later worked in an abattoir, as an electrical apprentice and as a process worker manufacturing parquetry tiles.
Fire Service
Wayne enjoyed a successful 25-year career in the NSW and ACT Fire Services.

Wayne's commitment to the fire service was rewarded when Wayne recieved The National Medal 25 year service award in 1988 |
He served in Sydney from 1963, after moving to Canberra in 1972 where he served in the ACT Fire Brigade until 1989. He then began his work in the Territory Assembly.

Along with all ACT Firefighters Wayne recieved the 1985 Canberran of the year award after a serious bushfire season in the ACT |
Wayne is a Graduate Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (UK) and during his career with the fire service achieved the rank of District Officer.
Wayne was also active in the Federal Firefighters Union (FFU).

Wayne joined the Australian Labor Party in 1973 and has performed various duties for the Ginninderra Sub-branch.
He also represented his Union as Union Delegate to Branch Council and Branch Conference. He participated as ACT Deputy Leader in 1991 and ACT Party Leader at the 1998 National Conference.
