No Pool For Belconnen

Stefaniak Promise Dead In The Water

Wayne Berry - Member for Ginninderra

Media Statement - 30 November 2000

Sports Minister Bill Stefaniak today admitted that Belconnen residents will not have a pool by the next election. Mr Stefaniak was responding to a question from Ginninderra MLA Wayne Berry in the ACT Legislative Assembly.

"After two elections when Bill Stefaniak promised a pool in Belconnen it is now clear that work on the promise has ground to a halt 6 years later," Mr Berry said.

"About the only sign Belconnen residents have of this promise are the pot holes from sod turnings which are now filled with water from the recent rain.

"The only creatures that will get a swim in a Stefaniak pool by the next election are tadpoles.

"Bill Stefaniak has repeatedly misled the Ginninderra Electorate about a pool for Belconnen. Time and time again this Minister has sung the praises of this ill-fated promise at sod turnings and announcements - or does the Minister think that all the pot holes from sod turnings will suffice.

"While his government has found tens of millions for the Futsal Slab, the 'Feel the Power' Campaign, the tragic hospital implosion and Kate Carnell's swan song, the Bruce Stadium, the Minister has shown just how ineffectual he has been by his repeated failure to deliver his Belconnen pool promise. Perhaps he too was distracted by his government's grandiose schemes.

"In 1992 I promised a pool for Tuggeranong - that pool was built and opened in 1994 while Labor was still in Government and the people of Tuggeranong have been swimming in it for years.

Compare this to the performance of Bill Stefaniak on the Belconnen pool over 6 years of office - nothing but pot holes," Mr Berry concluded.
