Ginninderra Labor MLA Wayne Berry has called for an urgent campaign from the Carnell Government to prevent repeats of a life-threatening attack from an overpass on a Canberra motorist.

The young driver was travelling along Belconnen Way when a large rock penetrated the windscreen of her car. Happily she escaped life-threatening injuries and the rock came to rest beside her in the front of the car.

"This and recent reports of a similar attacks interstate demand immediate action from the government. There must be an urgent campaign aimed at preventing this sort of incident being repeated.

"The government must consider placing protective screens on all locations which might be used for such attacks. Though unsightly, all measures must be considered to protect our citizens.

"The major responsibility of government is to protect the lives and wellbeing of our citizens and there can be no excuse to avoid an immediate response in the light of this incident.

"Deaths and serious injury have occurred elsewhere because of these attacks on innocent motorists and the wheel will not have to be to mount a campaign of preventative measures to protect our citizens.

"Urgent action is a must!," Mr Berry concluded.
