The latest development at the Williamsdale Quarry is yet another example of government mismanagement Labor Shadow Employment Minister Wayne Berry said today.
Mr Berry was commenting following news that another staff member at the quarry was sacked last Friday.
"I have raised concern after concern at the government’s mismanagement of the quarry, but they seem incapable of getting past their mistakes. Now it appears that workers at the quarry are paying the price for lost productivity.
"The high quality rock from the quarry is in demand and the people of the Territory could expect to save a lot of money on road works if the government moves to exploit its full potential - but the quarry has not reached its full potential.
"The government has failed at every step - the sale of half the quarry without notification to the Assembly; the failure to get the equipment running fully - the conveyor is still not working; and the failure to secure its share of the market.
"The Liberal Government has been secretive about the circumstances surrounding the serious failure in equipment at the quarry. When I asked for the report into the potentially life-threatening failure of the conveyor to be made public the government ran for the cover of ‘commercial in confidence’, refusing to provide the information.
"This project has more than a whiff of the Bruce Stadium about it. We can never get all the answers."
"On top of this it has now been revealed that the Auditor General has completed an investigation into the quarry but the results will not be available until November - after the October ACT Assembly election.
"The people of the ACT are entitled to full disclosure on sackings, workplace safety and productivity at the quarry before the ACT election," Mr Berry concluded.
