Media Statement - 16 March 2001

Wayne Berry MLA today launched the first ACT Legislative Assembly Member's home page.

wayneberry.net

"My web page is aimed at enhancing access and providing some background about me which the Ginninderra community might find interesting. I hope that the design of the site will help break down the barrier of the stiff, suited politician stereotype which seems to be the image conveyed to the community.

"All too often my constituents tell me that contacting their local politician is daunting because of the image

"I have found this image frustrating and I have set out to change it.

"I've included on the page a list of achievements and Assembly involvement as an indication of the sort of Assembly work I do for people who may be looking for help.

"I have also included a little about myself and the things that interest me as well as the things that motivated me to seek public office.

"The site contains links to a range of other interesting sites that people may enjoy browsing.

"According the Australian Bureau of Statistics about 35% of all ACT households (38,000) have home internet access, this is the highest rate in the country. Approximately 135,00 adults in Canberra have internet access so it's a logical step to provide a point of contact through web pages like mine.

"Hopefully this will give a glimpse of the person behind the 'suit' on TV," Mr Berry concluded.
