Get The Basics RightWayne Berry - Opposition Spokesperson on TourismMedia Statement - 10 February 2000The Carnell Government's failure to maintain Canberra's natural attractions is an insult to indigenous Australians and undermines the Territory's ability to attract tourists Labor Shadow Tourism Minister Wayne Berry said today. On a visit to the Latham area Grinding Grooves in Ginninderra Creek Mr Berry pointed to the dilapidated condition of the site's surroundings and the vandalised signage which has been missing for years. Mr Berry said, "The government's internet homepage boasts about our aboriginal sites but any visitor to this location would be ashamed about the government's indifference to our aboriginal heritage sites. "The site is on the register of the National Estate and is classified by the National Trust "There should be immediate consultation with the indigenous elders to develop a plan to preserve and showcase this fine example of aboriginal heritage in the region and the only site listed by the government in Belconnen. "The government describes this site as 'an important place in the Act demonstrating the traditional way of aboriginal life' but the condition of the site is appalling and would turn visitors right off the Territory. "A significant number of the calls to my office are from proud Canberrans upset at the disturbing appearance of our suburbs and the affect this has on our tourism potential. Here is a stand-out example," Mr Berry concluded. |
