Following John Howard’s attack on the Public Service and the ACT Government reversal on their 1998 election campaign promise not to introduce involuntary redundancies, Wayne took the issue to the Assembly. His concern followed the loss of thousands of public sector jobs and the exodus of workers from the ACT looking for more job security outside the ACT. The motion, supported by the Assembly, made it clear to the then Chief Minister that the government must stand by their election commitment and include a clause protecting workers against involuntary redundancies into the new agreements which were being negotiated. Outsourcing In another move by the former Liberal Territory Government to outsource forestry workers' jobs, Wayne successfully moved to prevent involuntary redundancies. |
