New Diabetes Program at Canberra Hospital
Wayne recently launched a new retinopathy screening program for people with diabetes. This will allow people who cannot access this service in the private sector to be screened as public patients at Canberra Hospital before complications advance too far. Retinopathy is a frequent complication of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and if left untreated it can lead to blindness. It is recommended that Type 1 diabetics be screened every 12 months and Type 2 every 24 months. The program will be able to screen up to 2000 patients annually. A database developed with the system will enable patients to be recalled for regular checks.
