Assembly to get MacedIn Westminster Parliaments the authority of the Speaker has traditionally been symbolised by an ancient weapon of war – the Mace. As the only Australian Parliament lacking this traditional symbol, the ACT Legislative Assembly has been generously provided with its own Mace, a gift from the other Australian Parliaments. The Assembly has settled on a design for the Mace, featuring a Y-section of stainless steel as a spine, representing Canberra’s distinctive urban design – the Y-Plan. The spine will be enclosed in locally sourced yellowbox timber, and has been decorated with images of the Territory’s floral emblem, Wahlenbergia gloriosa. By custom, the Mace is carried into the Assembly each sitting day by the Serjeant-at-Arms and remains in place while the Assembly is in session, with the larger end pointing towards the Government. It is expected that the Mace will be ready in time for when the Assembly sits in August. |
