Assembly Reaffirms Multicultural Community LinksIn 1998 the people of Chile presented a Moai statue to the people of Canberra. Local sculptor Matthew Harding worked with sculptors from Easter island to create the work for the Multicultural festival. In late 2002 the statue was installed in the Assembly courtyard by Assembly Speaker Wayne Berry with H.E. Mr Cristóbal Valdés, Ambassador of Chile in association with the Chilean Cultural Association. The statue was a highlight of the visit to Canberra by the Commanding Officer of the Chilean Training Ship ‘Esmeralda’ on a visit to Australia last year. The sculpture is in the public courtyard and can be seen from London Circuit.
